Back to Resources

About the event

Food plays a crucial role in promoting health and wellness, while also building community, strengthening culture, maintaining our planet’s health and nurturing joy.

Hear Dr. Annie Lalande speak about her work connecting food to patient and planetary health in her research study with the food services department at Vancouver General Hospital. Her findings help us:

  • Gain a better appreciation of the importance of food in the care of hospitalized patients
  • Understand some of the strengths and challenges with the existing food services model at Vancouver General Hospital
  • Identify avenues for climate action through food in your personal and professional lives

About the speaker

Dr. Annie Lalande is a fourth-year general surgery resident at the University of British Columbia and a PhD student at the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability at UBC. Her doctoral thesis, co-supervised by Drs. Andrea MacNeill and Jiaying Zhao, focuses on understanding the potential of food as a medicine in health care to impact the health of patients, health-care systems and the planet. She is also the lead for the Nourish Anchor Collaborative Vancouver team, a national initiative working to leverage food in healthcare to enhance community well-being, promote equity and mitigate climate change.
