2025 Climate Change Accountability Report Providence Health Care

Back to Resources

Providence Health Care’s 2025 Climate Change Accountability Report (CCAR) showcases continued progress in advancing planetary health while delivering high-quality, compassionate care.

The report highlights how Providence is integrating sustainability into clinical care, infrastructure and operations—demonstrating that climate action can strengthen both health outcomes and system resilience.

Key highlights

  • Strong progress on emissions and environmental sustainability targets. Providence achieved a 28% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from its 2010 baseline and surpassed targets for low carbon commuting, with nearly half of staff and medical staff trips made using clean transportation. These results reflect the impact of coordinated operational changes and staff engagement.
  • Leading in waste reduction and circular practices. The organization met its 2030 recycling target five years early, supported by innovative partnerships and expanded recycling streams for patient care materials. Initiatives such as reusable anesthetic equipment and enhanced recycling programs are reducing waste while maintaining high standards of care.
  • Embedding planetary health into care and infrastructure. Providence continued to integrate climate resilience into major redevelopment projects, including the new St. Paul’s Hospital, while advancing initiatives like food waste-to-energy, renewable energy installations and research on low carbon care delivery. These efforts connect environmental sustainability directly to patient and community well-being.

Looking ahead, Providence will continue to scale its Planetary Health Strategy—focusing on reducing environmental impact, strengthening system resilience and building capacity across teams to deliver sustainable, climate ready and high quality care.
