Achieving carbon neutrality for the 13th consecutive year, Fraser Health aligns with British Columbia’s net-zero emissions commitment and aspires to become a vanguard in social and environmental responsibility.
Climate change is a pressing issue that demands action from the public sector. Fraser Health’s 2022 Climate Change Accountability Report (CCAR) offers a glimpse into the organization’s progress and strategies in the face of this global challenge.
The report celebrates achievements including:
- Remarkable emission reduction projects, including retrofits, estimated to save 5.4 gigawatt hours of energy and reduce the health authority’s carbon footprint by 966 tonnes of CO2 annually.
- 29 per cent decrease in emissions per full-time employee equivalent, and 18 per cent emissions reduction per unit of floor area since 2007 levels.
The report also highlights challenges and actions to address them:
- Fraser Health saw a 2.6 per cent increase in total greenhouse gas emissions compared to the previous year. Factors such as site expansion, increased services, and higher heating demands during colder months have contributed to this rise.
- To counterbalance the emissions related to building energy, paper and mobile fleet equipment, $1,056,475 of carbon offsets were purchased from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy.
