The objective of this research project was to explore water-saving opportunities applicable to health care settings and identify innovative, yet feasible solutions within lower mainland facilities. The findings from this research aim to support Fraser Health, Providence Health Care, PHSA and Vancouver Coastal Health in meeting their 2030 water utilization reduction targets.
Water conservation is important for environmental sustainability, which is impacted by increasing demand for potable water, climate change, and urbanization. Health-care facilities are large consumers of water and therefore have a significant role to play. Demonstrating action toward water conservation promotes environmental stewardship and provides benefits for health-care facilities.
Qualitative methods were used to analyze the findings from literature reviews and semi-structured interviews held with health organization stakeholders. Common water-saving practices were shared with interviewees to identify challenges and opportunities for implementing water-saving initiatives.
The research identified seven categories of opportunities:

- Education and awareness
- Water metering
- Water management planning
- Operations and maintenance
- Climate resilience and energy synergies
- New construction and contracts
