Reducing Health Care’s Carbon Footprint with Sustainable Transportation Initiatives

In 2022, SFU Master’s of Public Health student Martha Holt completed a project for the Energy and Environmental Sustainability team, researching initiatives and opportunities to reduce health care’s carbon footprint, related to transportation. While the report itself focuses on Fraser Health, the literature and recommendations are also applicable and relevant to other health care organizations.

This report includes:

  • A background, global review of the environmental impact of health care and transportation
  • A background of sustainable transportation in B.C. and Fraser Health
  • Case Studies of sustainable transportation initiatives (with a focus on active transportation)
  • Recommendations for health organizations to increase sustainable transportation and reduce impacts on the climate
