Our work

Restoring and regenerating
the interdependent health
of people, place and planet

What Does GreenCare Do?

All GreenCare network activities are centred on the goal of restoring and regenerating the interdependent health of people, place and planet — now and for future generations.

The following Focus Areas, and the interconnected programs within each, are key to achieving this goal:

Climate Change

Move toward a climate-resilient health system and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in facility design and operations.

Energy and Carbon

Reduce our carbon footprint by increasing energy efficiency and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Food

Develop plant-forward, local, culturally relevant and equitable food service to advance food as medicine.

Leadership and Innovation

Collaboratively, foster a culture of transformative leadership and innovation for environmental sustainability in health care.

Materials

Choose materials and products that contribute to human and environmental health while avoiding waste and unnecessary chemicals.

Transportation

Increase access to and use of transportation modes that reduce negative environmental impacts and benefit human health and wellness.

Water

Minimize water consumption to reduce demand on natural resources and impact on our living environments.

These Focus Areas are interrelated, to each other and to all the work happening in the B.C. health organizations. Since the work in each area applies to all facets of health care, including construction of new hospitals, facility renovations, day-to-day operations of clinical and support services, purchasing and much more, advancing our health-care system toward environmentally sustainable and resilient care requires the collective effort of the entire health-care community.

GreenCare projects and initiatives are aligned with the public sector leadership roles of B.C.’s health authorities (CleanBC plan), and contribute to our annual Climate Change Accountability Reports. These reports outline our plans, actions and progress in reducing emissions and climate risk, and correspond with the BC Climate Change Accountability Act. However, legislation, policy and mandates are important enablers, not drivers. Managing climate risk must be driven by clear, consistent and determined action.
