Back to Our Stories

The Health Care Climate Challenge, organized by Health Care Without Harm, mobilizes health-care institutions around the globe to protect public health from climate change.

Hospitals, health systems and health-care facilities are invited to sign the Health Care Climate Challenge pledge and join the climate-smart health-care movement. Each year, the Energy and Environmental Sustainability (EES) team submits applications for the Lower Mainland health organizations, and 2019 saw the largest group of award winners in the history of the Climate Challenge: over 40 participating institutions from 15 countries.

The EES team is delighted to share news of the following awards that were announced:

  • Fraser Health
    Silver – GHG Reduction (Energy)
    Silver – Climate Resilience
  • Provincial Health Services Authority
    Silver – GHG Reduction (Energy)
  • Vancouver Coastal Health
    Silver – GHG Reduction (Energy)

These awards recognize the continued effort by the Lower Mainland health organizations in achieving significant reductions to their carbon footprint, developing carbon models of care and adapting to stand resilient to a changing climate.

As the only sector with healing as its mission, health care has an opportunity to use its ethical, economic and political influence to be a leader in climate solutions.
