Beehive Buzz at Holy Family Hospital and St. Vincent’s Langara

Back to Our Stories

Original story posted on PHC Connect (internal website) by Jill Liu, Special Projects Manager, Food Services at Providence Health Care and Sonja Janousek, Regional Manager, Environmental Sustainability

Providence Health Care (PHC) is thrilled to announce a sweet addition to their hospitals’ ecosystem!

Through collaboration of site leadership, Food Services, and the regional Energy and Environmental Sustainability Team, PHC now has buzzing beehives on-site at both Holy Family Hospital (HFH) and St. Vincent’s Langara (SVL) since May 22nd. This initiative aligns perfectly with PHC’s Mission Forward commitment to sustainability and supports biodiversity in our local environment.

In this pilot project, objectives include to:

  • Increase awareness about the importance of bees to the natural environment and food system
  • Identify success factors for beehive installation and maintenance in health care settings
  • Improve staff satisfaction in the workplace
  • Improve patient/client experience

They will be collecting feedback and lessons learned at the end of the season.

Why Bees?
Bees are vital pollinators, playing a crucial role in the growth of many of the fruits, vegetables, and flowers that we enjoy. By hosting beehives on our premises, we’re not only supporting the local bee population but also enhancing the biodiversity of our surroundings. Plus, let’s not forget about the delicious honey that these busy bees will produce!

What to Expect?
You might spot new winged friends buzzing around designated areas. Rest assured, these areas are carefully selected to ensure the safety of both staff and patients. We encourage everyone to admire these remarkable creatures from a distance and appreciate the important work they do for our ecosystem. The beekeeper visit the hive every 3-4 weeks, you are welcomed to observe the beehive and ask questions during his visit.
