Tucked into the Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) campus, the VGH Cycling Centre isn’t just a bike room—it’s a hub of health, safety, and connection for Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) staff and medical staff.
Managed by the VCH Transportation Service team, the Cycling Centre is popular. With 162 bike racks, eight lockers, 32 e-bike outlets, as well as repair tools, a water station and a towel service, the VGH Cycling Centre supports over 330 active members who choose to ride to work, rain or shine.
More than a facility, it’s a unique model of how infrastructure can promote active transportation, enhance wellbeing, and build community in health-care settings.

For my whole working life I have walked or cycled to work. I recognize how lucky I am,” says Sheril Gelmon, a longtime user and VCH Foundation representative. Before discovering the centre, she parked her bike at scattered racks across the campus.“The Cycling Centre adds a level of safety—and it’s just so convenient. It makes you feel part of something.”
Wellbeing, Convenience, Community

Anesthesiologist Deric Diep calls it the “crown jewel” of every hospital he’s worked in across three provinces. “Sometimes my favourite part of the day is my commute,” he says. With showers, secure storage, and clean facilities, he’s able to arrive at the hospital refreshed and ready. “It’s a huge quality of life boost.”
Beyond practicality, the centre fosters informal connection. “You see the same people every morning you wouldn’t otherwise,” says Diep. “That sense of community really matters.”
As e-bikes and interest in car-light living grow, the centre represents a critical shift toward greener commuting in health care. But there’s still room to grow. “The biggest opportunity now is awareness,” says Gelmon. “The facilities are excellent—people just need to know they exist.”
Get Rolling
Whether you’re a committed cyclist or curious about ditching the car a few days a week, the VGH Cycling Centre shows what’s possible when we design workplaces for people—and the planet. As Gelmon puts it: “If you’re even a little curious, check it out. It’s simpler than you think.”
Cycling Centre users have choice and flexibility in their membership options, making it possible to explore the facilities slowly for those newer to commuting.
