The BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) is pioneering the electrification of its support vehicle fleet. This project, part of BCEHS’ broader Strategic Sustainability & Decarbonization Plan, focuses on transitioning the support fleet—encompassing Paramedic Response Units, Supervisor, Manager, Link & Referral Units, Logistics, and Learning vehicles—from traditional fuel models to hybrid and fully electric vehicles (EVs).
Using the guiding principle of “Optimize – Rightsize – Electrify”, BCEHS aims to achieve a zero-emission fleet while maintaining functionality for life-saving operations.

Unique Challenges and Innovations
What makes this project remarkable is the complexity of integrating EV technology into emergency services. Unlike conventional fleets, BCEHS vehicles require advanced accessory upfitting to carry and access critical medical supplies. Finding EV platforms capable of these modifications posed an early challenge. With increasing EV options from other manufacturers, BCEHS is now piloting alternative platforms to ensure scalability and efficiency.
The project has already deployed 70 hybrid and 18 electric vehicles in full clinical operation.
Infrastructure deployment has also been a focus. Installing EV chargers across BCEHS’ extensive network of 182 stations is a multi-phase effort. Progress has been made, with 10 chargers already operational in Burnaby and others planned for the South Coast and Fraser Valley regions.
Measurable Impact
The project’s results speak volumes. Currently, the support fleet accounts for 10% of BCEHS’ total fleet emissions, with ambulances comprising the remaining 90%. While electrifying ambulances is on the horizon, the support fleet initiative has already achieved significant milestones:
- Annual emissions reductions of approximately 270 tonnes of CO2e.
- Over 420,000 emission-free kilometers driven by electric support vehicles.
- Fuel savings of 200,000 liters through hybrid vehicles covering 4 million kilometers.
These achievements underscore the operational and environmental benefits of fleet electrification, including reduced maintenance costs and fuel dependency.
A Sustainable Future
As BCEHS continues to electrify its fleet, the organization seeks to position itself as a leader in sustainability. Collaboration with clinical operations, fleet operations, facilities, and community partners will be key to overcoming challenges and ensuring the initiative’s success.
This ambitious project not only reflects BCEHS’ commitment to sustainability but also sets a precedent for integrating green technologies into critical healthcare services.
