Fraser Health introduces on-site bike repair for greener commuting

Fraser Health is helping transform the way its workforce commutes with the addition of bike repair stands and air pumps at nine of its facilities: Royal Columbian Hospital, Surrey Memorial Hospital (which offers two stations), Burnaby General Hospital, Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre, Eagle Ridge Hospital, Ridge Meadows Hospital, Langley Memorial Hospital, Peace Arch Hospital, and Chilliwack General Hospital.

The bike stands are sturdy enough to accommodate e-bikes and offer maintenance tools, so cyclists can do essential tune ups.

This project is an investment in the health of our employees,” explains Harpreet Bhumrah, lead for Transportation Demand Management & Commuter Services. “We want to foster a community of cyclists who feel safe and equipped to choose active transportation.”

This initiative, led by Integrated Protection Services (IPS) Commuter Services, goes beyond offering convenient amenities—it reflects a deep commitment to enhancing the well-being of employees. Cycling comes with considerable health benefits, from physical fitness to boosting mental clarity before a shift and also reduces greenhouse gas emissions and local air pollution.

Enabling active transportation contributes to action on Fraser Health’s Planetary Health Strategy. Making cycling more accessible for Fraser Health staff is one of the ways the health authority aims to increase the percentage of staff commuting actively from 5 per cent in 2022 to the target of 15 per cent by 2030.

As Fraser Health continues to enhance its cycling facilities, ensuring they are safe and well-equipped, it solidifies its role as a leader in fostering a sustainable, active and health-conscious workplace culture. This isn’t just about making it possible for staff to pump their tires; it’s about pumping a new perspective into how they think about their journey to work.
