G+L Toolkit: Blanket Warmer Toolkit
A recent G+L report, Saving Energy in Hospitals, identified medical equipment that may be turned off when not in use. This would reduce energy consumption, improve environmental performance and lower costs while maintaining current levels of patient care. A timer may be used on equipment such as patient monitors, renal dialysis machines and blanket warmers to ensure that they are turned back on at the appropriate time.
The pilot project, conducted in Spring 2015, achieved a 24% reduction in energy use by connecting a blanket warmer to a timer that cycled the unit off when not in use.
The project projects that 786 kWh in energy savings may be achieved annually per unit, and the payback period for the standard timer used is just over one year.
