Overview of Milestones and Awards

The Lower Mainland Health Care Organizations have collectively achieved significant success in their energy and environmental sustainability work across the various regions and health care sites. The following lists provide an overview of significant successes (highlighted through key GreenCare milestones and awards) for Fraser Health, Providence Health Care, Provincial Health Services Authority and Vancouver Coastal Health.

Fraser Health

2019

  • Awarded $300K funding for the HealthADAPT project by Health Canada's Climate Change and Health Adaptation Capcity Building Contribution Funding, in partnership with Vancouver Coastal Health, Fraser Health, Health Emergency Management BC, and Facilities Management (GreenCare)
  • Received the Fortis BC Efficiency in Action Public Sector Award 
  • Phase 2 of the clinical recycling trainer pilot at Peace Arch Hospital
  • Implemented Transit Incentive Program (TIP) 
  • Recruited 7 new Green+Leaders

2016

  • Launch of the Climate Resilience & Adaptation Program
  • 100% implementation of the Recycling Renewal Program across all acute and residential care health care sites

2015

  • Launch of the Green Revolving (Facilities) Fund
  • Above and Beyond Collaborative Partnerships Award: Energy & Environmental Sustainability Team

Providence Health Care

2019

  • Sustainability, including environmental stewardship, is named as one of four foundational principles in the 2019 PHC Strategic Plan: Mission Forward
  • CEO Brian Simmers joined the G+L Program in 2019, marking an important milestone of leadership engagement for environmental sustainability 
  • Climate Risk & Risilience Workshop led by EES Climate Resilience & Adaptation team in partnership with the new St. Paul's Hospital's project team and City of Vancouver to priortize new LEED resilience credits and provide input into design and construction specifications

2018

  • Rezoning Application Submitted for New St. Paul’s Hospital Redevelopment

2016

  • 100% implementation of the Recycling Renewal Program across all acute and residential care health care sites

2019

  • HUB’s Spring & Fall Bike to Work Award, Best in Health Care
  • Environmental questionnaires used in four PHSA Supply Chain RFPs to evaluate proponet products and equipment, signalling to vendors the importance of environmental sustainability to healthcare system purchases
  • Advances made in two innovative heat recovery projects (BC Children's and Women's campus) using a Thermal Gradient Header (TGH) approach.
