Get Involved in Earth Day 2020

Each year on April 22, more than one billion people worldwide celebrate Earth Day by adding their voice and actions to the largest environmental event in the world.

This year, the theme for Earth Day is “Climate Action”

Get involved in Earth Day by attending or organizing an activity.

Below are five tips and ideas to get you started.

1. Organize a lunchtime movie screening

Host a lunchtime screening of an environmental documentary and encourage colleagues to bring their lunch. Afterwards, you could hold a Q&A session to encourage colleagues to share what the movie meant to them.

2. Host a plant-based or vegetarian lunchtime potluck

Meat consumption has grown by 20% globally in the last decade and animal agriculture is the leading cause of species extinction, ocean dead zones, water pollution and habitat destruction. Consider going meatless for Earth Day or Earth Week by organizing a staff potluck!

3. Run a staff photography competition

Inject some healthy competition in the workplace by organizing an Earth Week photography competition that asks staff to capture what Earth Day means to them. Need prizes? You can contact Sarah Currie, the Green+Leaders Network Lead, for prize information at sarah.currie@fraserhealth.ca.

4. Initiate a department-wide energy saving and/or waste reduction campaign

Visit the BC GreenCare website to access toolkits and resources to help you initiate a workplace campaign. From “One Less Cup” to “Turn Off the Lights” toolkits, we have sample checklists and other resources to get you started.

5. Join the Green+Leaders Network!

Why not join the Green+Leaders Network? We’re a community of health care staff interested in sustainability, and we’re working as agents for change during Earth Day/Week. If you are already a Green+Leader, encourage colleagues to join. Contact Sarah today and ask about obtaining Earth Day posters to display! It couldn’t be easier to sign up and register.
